Attack of the Beards!

So No-Shave November came and went… so did December. Always having a fascination with beards, I’ve decided to go “long”. Though I’m sure she doesn’t remember, I got her permission to go for a year of beard.

I had done some minor research in previous years and found some that was interesting but of little use at the time.

Having a renewed vigor for blogging and beards, I was able to track down a little more information. On IFC there is a show called “Whisker Wars”, which chronicles the trials and tribulations of several “bearding” competitors.

“Bearding” is considered a sport by many, and it involves growing, grooming and/or shaping one’s beard into pleasing shapes and patterns. Bearding Organizations include:

The World Mustache and Beard Association (WBMA)

-“The purpose of the World Beard and Moustache Association is to promote the worldwide appreciation of beards and moustaches, and to co-ordinate international events, including competitions, held in such a manner as to encourage friendship among those with beards and moustaches.”

The WBMA helps to co-ordinate the World Championships which will next be held in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany on Nov. 2nd, 2013. For more information visit the WBMA website - www.wbma.info

The nearest WBMA club in Washington is the Whisker Club in Bremerton. You can find more information at their website – whiskerclub.org

Beard Team USA (for Mustaches Too)

-“Beard Team USA® organizes the annual National Beard and Moustache Championships®, represents the United States at international beard and moustache competitions, and through its network of over 100 local chapters, promotes the appreciation of facial hair nationwide.

Membership in America’s team is open to everyone. There are no annoying applications, dues, membership requirements, or gender tests. Unlike some sporting organizations, Beard Team USA® encourages the use of performance “enhancing” substances.

BTUSA® also opposes discrimination against the bearded, mustached, sideburned, and goateed.”

From watching “Whisker Wars” Season 1, I noticed some issues between the WBMA and BTUSA. They didn’t really dive too much into it, but there was obvious tension.

BTUSA held the 2012 Nationals in Las Vegas this last November. The 4th National Championship will be held in New Orleans on September 7th, 2013. For more information please visit their website - beardteamusa.org

There is a local chapter of BTUSA right here in Spokane. The Spokane Beard and Mustache Club holds meetings on the 4th Thursday of every month (locations rotate, so check for the next meeting place).

-“Our goal is to connect individuals within Spokane community who support the bearded lifestyle. We consider the bearded community to consist of those with beards, mustaches, and even future furry faces. We also warmly welcome our female friends who we call whiskerinas.”

For more information please check their website - spokanebeardmustache.com

It is fun learning more about beards and bearding. Be sure to watch out for more posts on the subject down the road.

Back in the game..

Well,

It's been over a year since I've posted.  Shame on me...

Updates from this year:

1.  I did finally nail down a job... drafting for a mechanical engineering firm.  It's awesome.  I work with a great group people, and we usually get to drink beer on Thursday afternoons.

2.  Please say hello to the Root beer Ranger.  He's only 8 months old... but he'll be brewing as soon as he can say International Bitterness Units.

"Heeee don't want to work...."

3.  Well... I guess I've just been kind of lazy with the whole blogger thing.  My apologies.

Let's get it crackin....

Goals for this year....

1.  Brew, talk, and/or taste one of every major style of beer listed by the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program).

2.  Talk with home brewers, local brewers, small brewers about brewing.  "How did you get into brewing?"  "What's your favorite beer?"  "What's brewing techniques, tips, tricks, cannot live without equipment, do you use?"

3.  Beards...Big beards...Fancy beards... All things beard and bearding.

4.  Anything else that pops in my head... I've already listed the only three, but maybe there's more.

So I hope you had a lovely holiday or just a nice weekend at home with family.  I'll talk to ya soon.

"Were you naughty this year?"
